Most email systems that send mail over the Internet use SMTP to send messages from one server to another; the messages can then be retrieved with an email client using either POP or IMAP protocols. An SMTP server, or mail server, is a computer that runs the SMTP protocol and provides the necessary services to send and receive emails.

The SMTP server is responsible for ensuring the delivery of email messages between different systems, as well as enforcing any policies or restrictions on sending and receiving emails.
